There is a particular way to sit. A way to hold the paddling tools. Practise and patience to learn this vanishing skill; varied across potter communities in India.

At Sandur village, the potters throw an average of 15 matkas, a day, on the wheel. At leather hard, paddle them, by the end of the day. This may be the last generation who will make handmade matkas.

I’ve had the chance to work with the Sandur Collective’s potters, Honnurswamy and
Raju Anna, Vasantha and Annapoorna Amma.
Anna remarked, “You do know how to throw, but paddling is hard! “

We made some playful works together. Priceless exchanges! All made possible by the amazing team @hampiartlabs Meera @mcuram @harshada_hk @shivu.mahesh @v_dilip.rathod and Puja, at the Sandur Collective.

There have been many other material experiments during this residency; inspired by the Land; that’ll evolve in my art practise over time.
